edit for blog 5

In this edit i have added another title page which says “They’re coming soon” this subverts the normal conventions of a teaser trailer because i havent just put a date or just coming soon i have tried to relate the word they’re with the slogan and the genre of my trailer. I had to re enter in the inkspots music because i realised where i had done my editing of the clips the music had just been jumping and so i deleted it and transferred back in the audio line. The pace of my trailer is quite slow compared with normal horror movie trailers but i have purposely been trying to achieve this effect because of the inkspots music as the song is quite slow and jazz like but has potential in places to be quite creepy as like the strangers trailer which uses this song and was where i got my initial ideas and inspiration from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTR1vN0scKA, they use the song at the start of the trailer with the jumpy repetitive effect. I have decreased the font of my title The ghosts of Woodchester Park as it looked stretched and not the same proportions as the other title pages and so its much more visuable the size it is now however the from director alice monaghan was increased because this was too small and not visuable enough. I have also added two more clips which are close ups acting on the advise given to me on having the same types of camera works in my trailer, one is a close up of my actress fran crying and the relevance behind this is meant to be that she cant find her friends and the other one is of the villians face or mask with blood which i have added a ghost effect to that blurrs the end of the clip.

2nd edit of the poster

After further research on film posters and the conventions used, i have decided to re arrange the structure of my poster. Now the title of the poster is in the middle of the page and i have moved the slogan to the top of the page so that you are drawn to this slogan before anything else as there is nothing else surrounding this area, i have kept the exsisting colour scheme throughout of the white black and red tieing this in with  the colours of the photograph. I thought that the font i was using for writing the cast was to different from the other fonts on the page and so i am now sticking with times new roman and keeping that simply, i now need to think about the conventions at the bottom of the poster or having something other than coming soon e.g production company etc i like the font used for this called blackadder which is the perfect film type of font and will work well around the rest of my poster.

I will continue to edit this until i feel that it is working and still following poster conventions.

I have been using my time recently to do more research on the film magazine front cover and poster.  I have found this website http://www.horrorfilmmag.com/  which feeds its articles and news off the online site, i found this by researching on google horror film magazines as i wanted a specific film magazine genre rather than using empire etc. Then this magazine is suited to my genre and the titles and structures can be linked with the ideas i have for my ancilliary texts.  I have also done some more research into the old film magazine scarlet which was also quite specific on horror genre here are a couple of images of the magazines front covers:

Both of these look old fashioned with the colours not really very bright or modern and look slightly like a book cover (first one like a fairytale cover). It still consists of normal conventions such as the slogan at the top of the page a bold title thats a different colour from everything else, pictures and barcodes, i think these magazine covers link with my trailer alot and have this sort of not cheesy but old fashion classic look to them which is the sort of feel you get when watching my trailer and so i could learn alot from anaylising these front covers. I have also researched this magazine called The monsters but i cant find that much information about the magazine and so i can only work on the film magazine cover here is a picture of the cover:

This one is also quite old fashioned and the colour seems a little faded and again the colours used arent very modern and arent bright. I think this magazine front cover doesnt include as many conventions than the scarlet magazine because there isnt a barcode or date etc, there isnt any slogans but instead they have been replaced with quotes. The left side of the page has the contents of the magazine which contrasts with the picture colour and space on the right side of the page. Underneath i have posted a picture of a more modern day magazine called empire and although this doesnt specialise in horror films and nothing else it is still useful for me to research.

Empire magazine is a british film magazine published monthly by Bauer consumer media it is a modern and up to date magazine compared to the two above. It doesn’t specify in certain genres of film but mainly the blockbuster ones, so it wouldn’t be just on horror films, therefore i couldnt totally relate to it like the other ones, but it uses a range of magazine conventions and also subverts some. This is one of my favourite issues because the cover is on the dark knight film with a charecter poster (which i have researched before) the font colours and changing in fonts throughout the poster plays with this joke/comical attitude which is created by the charecter himself. I defintly think that i could use this poster to arrange my structure, and take the ideas of using the normal conventions and subverting them for a more  independent look.

Mark scheme for the coursework

  1. 60 for construction of trailer
  2. 20 for research and planning
  3. 20 evaluation (evaluation needs to be written formally and sophisticated not like an essay)

The evaluation could include powerpoints, surveys and needs to have discussions perhaps audience feeback on specific parts of the trailer. Would work well as one body of writing and then several links to other things e.g powerpoints, websites. The evaluation questions will be as followed:

  1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real products
  2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts (ancillary text means your poster and magazine design)
  3. What have you learned from audience feedback? (could use videos here to make discussions on your feedback)
  4. How did you use media technolgies in the construction and research, planning and evaluating stages

50 %  of your exam is based on a therotical evaluation of production. In other words half the exam requires you to reflect on your coursework

Section A – Therotical evaluation of production

- requires us to describe and evaluate their skills development over the course from AS/A level digitial technology, creativity, research and planning, using the normal conventions and from real media text.

- the question b requires canditates to select one production and evaluate it in relation to media concept. The list of concepts to which questions will relate as follows.

The five that i need to be thinking about are genre, narrative, representation, audience and Media language.

1st edit of poster

I have started to think about my poster recently as i feel my trailer is running smoothly. After starting with the photograph of the tree i realised it didn’t really have that much to do with corridors and therefore wouldnt link with my trailer footage so i went back to the other options i had for titles which were “The ghosts of Woodchester Park” and “Physical Phenoma”. Out of the two i really like The ghosts of Woodchester Park as i think it is catchy and my trailer has this old feel to it because the building is so old and the music is too and so although not cheesy it does have an old feel compared to modern trailers, this title works really well with that. I then took a still from my trailer footage of My actress Becky sat on the floor with her arms behind her back and hands tied up with rope and blood, i have then empathised this by putting the red from the tree onto the poster and rotated and arranged this so it looks like the blood is spilling out from her hands, i then increased and decreased the levels so that it would be a similar colour to the writing at the top of the page. I have also included a slogan which is the same slogan used on my trailer it says “when you have entered IT wont let you leave” i have done this in the same colour as the blood and the title of the poster and i like the way i can add this in the space of black which does work well in the composition/structure of the poster. I have kept simply black white and red colours and all of this was inspired by these two posters The godfather and the last house on the left.

I have looked closely at the godfather poster as it is also just done in black and white very sharply not grey colours and then it has a little bit of red used to give that dangerous/blood effect. Also i like the way that the last house on the left poster uses grey and black colours and then one word of the title is in red suggesting this dangerous element of the film. Underneath this paragraph i have published where my poster first started off and what i have done since then and how it is now, quite like to have some feedback on this as i have think its working  really well.

This is a print screen of one of the close ups i have filmed for my trailer. I have filmed about 7 close up shots in total and i have done some on her crying because she cant find her friends and her boyfriend and have done this in a brighter light so perhaps doesnt work aswell. I have then done some were she is shouting out “kate” and “danny” where the impression on her face looks worried, which im hoping will add fear to my trailer as i think its missing that emotion atm. The last shot i have taken is of fran with her head in her hands as if shes going crazy this is probably the most effective but i took the shot in two different angles and so it changes half way through the clip.

These are the photographs im thinking of using for my posters. The first two are the original photographs one is slightly out of focus and so i didnt use that one, whereas the other one is much more sharp and clear so i am using this one as my poster. I then did some editing and just lowered the brightness and the hue because it was to bright for the genre of the movie whereas the darker poster reflects the atmosphere  more, the last photograph is has a title on the top of the poster “the ghosts of woodchester park”  which fits well with the structure of the poster. I have decided to call my movie the corridor because this had the highest votes on the poll i made and fits in the best with the footage in my trailer of the long corridors and searching for her friend.

My trailer (changes)

After much in depth thought and experiementing with my excisting trailer after coming back to school and viewing it again these are the things i think need to be changed:

  • I need to produce and film close ups of both my actresses one with Fran screaming or looking frightened then as Becky has been tied up and has dissapeared we dont want to give that much away and so therefore will only shoot a small part of her face and maybe add blood to it.
  • I need to make sure my trailer holds enough atmosphere throughout
  • The clip nearer the end where Becky is shot from a high angle, while the villian walks around the room is still quite a cheery shot and so i need to work on bringing the brightness of this shot down and work on making this look more like a haunted mansion. The hands on this clip are tied up in rope and have blood on them, by re-creating this i can shoot a close up and add more blood elements in my trailer.
  • The introduction is a pan of the camera starting at the top of the mansion with the sky and slowing moving down the building until you see two girls, originally this was thought to have been to slow but now we have come to play around with the rest of the clips this one really works and so if we can fasten the pace of it i will be adding this just because the entrance first scene. I may however use a fade or fade to black to seperate the entering through door scene and the pan of the building otherwise it jumps
  • When you watch the trailer over a couple of times and really think about clips you realise that some of the orders dont actually make sense and so i need to have a re-think about making sure it still flows like a story even if it isnt giving us all the details. Otherwise if anyone was to take great detail in looking at it they would realise some clips should be before others or things are happening before they should be etc.

Over christmas i havent really put my blog at the top of my priority as preparing for my portfolio for art foundation, of which i have added some of my as media work. I did however add columbia pictures to my research on the opening of trailers and films, which will help in continuing learning about the many picture groups. It was made clear to me before the christmas holiday that my trailer consisted of alot of mid shot and long shots and that my diversity of the camera work wasnt that great. I have now taken it upon myself to start planning another filming sesson where i can then gather some close up shots to bring to my trailer more emotion and fear especially with it being a horror genre (i think this has been something really missing in my trailer and so im quite excited about changing this around) now unfortunately it may appear difficult for me to film in the same location due to weather and the season etc and so filming these close ups will have to be done in a realitively dark or similar place so that audiences cant tell the difference between the location change. I will use the same actors but maybe not a close up of both this needs to be thought through much more or wether it may bring a different element to the trailer if i decided to get a close up of the villian and see the twists that this might bring on it. Will see i shall get onwards and upwards with my planning!

Opening of trailers

Research into the opening and endings to trailer

This post is about looking into the opening and endings of trailers e.g when it says rogue pictures presents etc. Im doing this so that either i can use one of these pictures in the opening of my trailer to make it more professional or i will create my own either way i need to research to understand these openings. The first one that i looked into was universal horror i couldnt actually find that much information on this but i know that it isnt a recent development and i believe it is owned byt universal pictures which is the secong longest living studio. I also looked into rogue pictures which is known as a devision of relatively media and was originally launced by Focus features under universal pictures and the division has over 25 films in its libary. However universal will continue to launch rogues 30 up and coming developments, im using the research on rogue pictures because they are featured in the opening of the strangers and this was the film i used as one of my original to help with my understanding of trailers. I have also looked at intrepid pictures they are much more successfulThen rogue pictures and have their own website http://www.intrepidpictures.com/home.asp They were founded in 2004 by Trevor Marcy and Marc D evans Intrepid pictures is a feature film production and co financing company. Intrepid has produced and co financed six pictures to this current date and is distributed by rogue pictures, universal and other international distributors. Inteprids targets the action, horror, thriller and comedy genres targetting the 12 – 29 year old. Their most recent recognized film is the strangers and other films they have produced are doomsday, balls of fury,The hitcher,The return,Waist deep.

I have also looked into Walt disney pictures which i know doesnt have much relevance to my trailer but i thinka all round understanding of pictures would help alot in creating my own. So walt disney pictures is associated with several other partners involved in the Walt disney company, walt disney pictures was established as a desgination in 1983 prior to walt disney films since 1954 were released under the name of walt disney production another comapny. Walt disney pictures distributes most of their films internationally via Walt disney studios motion pictures with few expected movies to canada.

I have also looked at RKO pictures which is a intellectual property assests to develop entertainment properties for production and distribution purposes Their stratergy includes devoting resources to the famous classic libary for more current audiences as it develops other businesses and entertainment properties, the companys will will seek out extra distributors and co financing ventures for their new productions aswell as for their old sequels and remakes. RKO actually stands for radio keith Orpheum but could also be known as the RKO coporation, some of the films they have distributed are King Kong, its a wonderful life, mighty joe young and hamburger hill.

I really enjoyed doing this research for my trailer and definetly feel that i should produce my own ’something’ pictures for the opening of my trailer. I just think it makes the trailer look much more professional and it will help alot in improving my end result of A2 because i have added this in on my own and would have to create the text and titles from scratch on another software and then copy that into premiere out of the ones i have researched on this page i will probably focus most of my ideas on the universal horror pictures because i think the grey/spooky atmosphere it gives off from the imagery and colours used is very effective and this one certianly fits with the genre of my trailer.

Columbia Pictures is another company which after doing the other ones above i came across when watching “Bridget Jones” . Columbia Pictures is an american film production and distribution company and forms part of the group which is owned by sony pictures entertainment,It is one of the leading film companies in the world and probably out of these pictures the one that people will recognize most. This opening links closely with that of big blockbuster movies and action films and when seeing this opening i think of film genre like action, comedy, romance and never really horror. I think that when horror movies have picture companies you dont really know of it adds to the atmosphere of the movie.

Title fonts

Fifth lesson today i was practicing fonts for my title, poster and magazine front cover. I had made the decision when practicing the opening to my trailer that i would defintly use sandscript btn without really thinking into other fonts that would be effective on this page i have practiced all three of the most popular title ideas which are “the corridor, Physical phenoma and the ghosts of woodchester park” and i have also practiced with the font youngsook btn aswell as the one i had already started using and after looking at the titles in this font i think i probably prefer it however more research is still needed, by transferring these onto my trailer to see which one works to be more atmospheric. I think the titles i have come up with are very well thought through with the help of the woodchester website were i managed to conjure up words and titles from, but i have also researched into whether any of these titles have been used for any other movies and i believe that they havent. I think my favourite is the ghosts of woodchester park but my trailer unfortunately doesnt really excist with ghosts in because we see a man clearly throughout.
