The film The Strangers stars Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, directed by Bryan Bertino. The film is about the couple who are attacked by mysterious masked strangers in their home one night. The film itself is extremely effective and as the film navigates the tense relationship of the couple, these threesome interrupt whose identity throughout remains concealed. The film starts off to be quite slow and restrained but as we get nearer the end the director provides us with enough action for the film to be successful. I believe that this film is cleverly crafted maintaining commitment to a creepy feel, playing on the idea of strangers finding you alone in your house and terrifying you. Also the fact the film has claimed to be inspired by “true events”; throughout the film they make this clear by subtle details such as moving objects and a scratched, looping record player. This affectively brings us to feel sympathetic towards the couple because their intimacy and fear is obviously the most truthful.
The Trailerportrays the film to be particularly action filled and gory with a fast moving plot. It starts off with a series of still images of houses which appear to be like you would see in an estate agents in the 1950’s and the old music from a record player accompanying. The director has purposly desaturated these images to make them seem from this era and then dropped the images down onto the screen in the style if an old film camera like a rolling clip. It then starts to decay and the screen has a red cross over it whilst it moves in to focus on the couples house in the woods. From then on the clips are fast with the sort of bullet noise between each clip and the bording around the page making it seem much more intense. This to me portrays the film as having a fast moving plot and as most of the clips appear to have knifes, axes and blood this makes you think it will be another gory typical horror movie.
The Poster, I think the space in which they have placed liv Tyler and the masked man is to big and so gives the poster a feeling of emptiness which to look at makes it awkward. The director has obviously used the two main characters or dominant people throughout the film in this poster and the villian is just emerging from the darkness of the corner of the room. The slogan “we tell ourselves theres nothing to fear but sometimes were wrong” i feel is quite cheesy and doesnt really scare me or make me want to see this film i think its lacking in rhythm and edge, it makes me feel like were being dumped down because really we should understand what the film is about just by looking at the poster. The statement “inspired by true events” caught me at first and made me think the film was actually based on true events which then made me fear a little more, however the word inspired is completly different from the word based and doesnt mean that the film is about something that happened in real life.I feel that this has obviously been done to catch people out like me otherwise there wouldnt be any reason why they would need to put this anyway.
My trailer will follow some of these convetions for example the idea of the plot of the film that they are contained in this house and the area for the whole time, this will happen in my trailer because it will all be filmed in the same building and the surrounding area. Im going to take the idea of the trailers opening because i really enjoy the way that it rolls down the pictures of the houses like some old film camera and then starts getting much more dark with the reds etc, i want to use this idea to include a establishing shot of the mansion to get this feel of where audiences are and the mansion looks nice and not scary from the outside in daylight, so this i will be subverting. The masks in the trailer are something i am sticking quite closely to and following the conventions as the victims in my trailer are not going to be wearing masks just like liv tyler in this film whereas the villians in the film are all wearing masks and their identity is never revealed although you see several close ups of the masks so my villians identity will never be revealed although there will be a close up of his mask.
